Forestview middle school

What it is:  Warrior Day of Service is an organized and planned event in it’s fourth year,  sponsored Brainerd Area Youth Ministries (B.A.Y.) and ISD 181 that gives students grades 5-12 an opportunity to volunteer in their community and develop a love of community and service.

When:  Wednesday, April 5th, an early-out day in the school schedule.  Classes get out at 1:10 pm.

Forestview Middle School:  Unlike previous years, WDS at Forestview Middle School will begin at 8:25 am during school hours and will engage all 2200 students in a day of service learning.  The goal is to bring all projects and speakers to the school rather than bus them around the community.  We are hoping to bring in 10-12 non-profit service organizations to engage students in projects and expose kids to volunteering and a sense of community.  We are currently looking for project ideas and resources to make this happen.

Brainerd High School:  April 5 is a scheduled early-out day, at 1:10 Students will go to the launch area at Brainerd High School where they will meet the adults assigned to their projects.   Volunteer groups will walk to or be bused to their work projects and will serve for either 1.5 hours or longer 4 hour project.  Parents can specify the length of service time their student will be involved in on the registration form.   When finished volunteers will return to Brainerd High  School.

Where they will serve:  There are two lengths of service projects proposed at this time: 1.5 hour projects, and 4 hour projects.  Shorter projects will be given to those students who are involved in after school activities that need to get to practice and younger students .  Area non-profits, nursing homes, and public facilities are being asked to host the volunteers.  We could have kids serving at parks, Habitat for Humanity building sites, Camp Confidence, nursing homes and care faculties, food shelf and soup kitchen, and with local residents who need help.  This is all dependent on busing and the number of students and adults who sign up.
